I found [1] which explains the w.x.y.z versioning, but how does nmaven
handle the version in the pom vs. the one in the assembly?  If w.x.y.z
is a requirement, then how does 1.3-alpha1 work?

should be the one in assembly, and 1.3-alpha1 will be rendered as 1.3 only

bong
for alpha versions it should be in a 0 series like 0.14 or 0.16.1.2
