Problem in delpoying an external jar to the local repo

uday shankar
Hi,
I deployed an external jar(not Maven jar, but a jar created in our project) to the local repository.
but after deploying when I tried running the command mvn package, the jar was not being picked up from the local repo. Error : unable to resolve dependency.

Steps which I used to deploy the jar intot he local repo :
1. I copied the jar into my local system
2. wrote the groupid, artifactid and version info in the dependency tag and placed it in the pom.xml
3. passed the same values of groupid , artifactid and version as parametres in the mvn install:install command.

Please help

Try installing into your local repository by running the following command:

mvn install:install-file -Dfile=your-artifact.jar -DgroupId=some.group
-DartifactId=your-artifact -Dversion=your-version -Dpackaging=jar

Paste the <dependency> element from your pom and double check the
spelling.  If you installed it successfully and now can't retrieve it,
something doesn't match.

Separately, installing it under the org.mule group is questionable.
Unless you work at (I think) Mulesoft you should pick your own
groupId.

Re: Problem in delpoying an external jar to the local repo

Hi Wendy,
Generally how does one decide the groupid?
Can it be any value?
Here I gave the group id as    org.mule.modules

I just decided on this group Id randomly I just wanted to put the jar in some folder so I chose this, are there any guidelines which are to be followed while selecting a groupId
My pom.xml :
     <dependency>
            <groupId>org.mule.modules</groupId>
            <artifactId>Ota_Sonata</artifactId>
            <version>1.0</version>
            <scope>provided</scope>
        </dependency>
Command :mvn install:install-file -Dfile=D:\Ota_Sonata.jar -DgroupId=org.mule.modules -DartifactId=Ota_Sonata -Dversion=1.0 -Dpackaging=jar -DgeneratePom=true

Re: Problem in delpoying an external jar to the local repo

Rafael Vanderlei
Are you running mvn install:install-file and mvn package in the same
machine? mvn install only put artifacts into the local repo and if you are
trying to package from another machine (other developer's or CI's machine)
then it will not find the artifact there.

1. Check your local repo and see if the artifact was succesfully installed.
2. Run mvn package -X and check if there are valuable information displayed
concerning the missing artifact (are you sure the missing artifact is the
one you are trying to install? Maybe it´s another artifact).

About groupId, personally I use the company domain (if it´s an artifact
built to the company) or my personal domain (if it´s an artifact built to
personal use). If I am working in a project that delivers multiple
artifacts, I include the project name into the groupId. It´s a similar
approach to choosing package names.

Re: Problem in delpoying an external jar to the local repo

After running the mvn install: install command I could successfully deploy my jars onto the local repo.
And infact I added around 100 jars to my local repo yesterday and when running mvn package command, the compiler could pick up the jars which I deployed. But today morning when I came and tried mvn package, I got the following error :

Re: Problem in delpoying an external jar to the local repo

First off, don't EVER post a full stack trace like that to this email
list again unless you have been specifically requested to do so. Post
it somewhere like pastebin.com and send a link here. The full stack
trace is almost never necessary to debug an issue.

Secondly, can you honestly not grok that stack trace to find the root
cause? Here's a hint, look for the words repository.jboss.com in the
massive text you sent and you'll find the problem.

Re: Problem in delpoying an external jar to the local repo

uday shankar
Hi Wayne,
Yeah I checked that(repository.jboss.com) out. It says access denied to the particular jar. So I found the jar in the onlilne maven repository and found the project coordinates of that jar from that repo and then I tried to run mvn package, so that it will pick the jar from that online repo. But it gave the same error.I also added the repository tag.

Also, my doubt, when the jar is present in my local repository why is maven not picking it up from the local repo, why does it look into the online repo?Whaat is the reason for that?

Look at the error again. It is not complaining about the jar file. It
cannot find the pom file.

Most likely you only have the jar in your local repo -- you need the pom too.

I have the pom too.
Are you tryin to say that maven is not able to pick up the pom, if yes, what is the way i can resolve this?
I have the pom , infact yesterday I could run mvn package successfully but today it shows this error, so I thought it is not able to connect to the local repo.
Please suggest a way forward.

Hi Wayne,

I am facing some what same problem, I installed some jars in my repository and put the dependency in the pom.xml. It worked fine on my machine. But if i am copying the same directory structure( created on my machine by installing the jar files using install-file) to some other machine then its failing and giving the  error as

Caused by: org.sonatype.aether.resolution.ArtifactResolutionException: Could not transfer artifact org.omg.CORBA:jacorb:pom:1.0 from/to java.net (http://download.java.net/maven/1): No connector available to access repository java.net (http://download.java.net/maven/1) of type legacy using the available factories WagonRepositoryConnectorFactory

dependency mentioned in the pom as

<dependency>
                        <groupId>org.omg.CORBA</groupId>
                        <artifactId>jacorb</artifactId>
                        <version>1.0</version>
